New Sewing Skills Point Toward Income Potential

Meet Fannie, who’s staying at the Mission’s Women’s Crisis Center this month. The mother of six and grandmother of three is learning to sew. Day Coordinator Leona Tennin teaches it as a Life Skills class, designed to impart knowledge that could produce income.

Fannie already is creating hand-sewn purses and pillows with an eye toward participating in an online business through additional training she’s getting through the Rockford Housing Authority and a new, online craft marketplace called Etsy.

“I’m so excited to be learning this,” she says.
